If you have ever brewed traditional loose-leaf tea, you know the quiet anxiety of the spoon. How much is too much? A tablespoon of fluffy white tea weighs entirely different from a tablespoon of tightly rolled dark tea.
In Western tea culture, this guesswork often leads to bitter, over-steeped cups or weak, watery infusions. At Oriental Spirit, we believe that the perfect cup of Eastern tea should not require a digital scale on your kitchen counter.

Through extensive testing with standard Western teaware (typically 16oz to 24oz teapots), we discovered that the secret to the perfect brew isn't just about the water temperature—it's about mathematically calibrating the exact weight of the tea leaves based on their fermentation level. Here is the science behind our 6-gram and 8-gram mini cakes.

The 6-Gram Rule for White Tea

White tea is the most delicate and least processed of all Chinese teas. Because it is simply sun-withered and never heavily rolled or compressed, the leaves remain large, fluffy, and highly porous.

If you use too much white tea, the rapid extraction of its natural compounds can overwhelm the palate. We found that exactly 6 grams is the ultimate sweet spot. It provides enough surface area to release those crisp, sun-baked floral notes and deep amino acids without ever crossing into astringency, even if you accidentally leave it steeping in your mug for a few minutes too long.

The 8-Gram Rule for Pu-erh

Pu-erh tea, whether Raw (Sheng) or Ripe (Shou), is an entirely different beast. These teas are made from robust, ancient tree leaves and undergo complex microbial fermentation or aging. Furthermore, they are tightly compressed.

Because of this density and the complex, heavy molecules formed during fermentation, Pu-erh requires a slightly higher dose to properly "cut through" the volume of a standard Western teapot.

For Raw Pu-erh:8 grams ensures the complex, wild orchid aromas and the deep, returning sweetness (Hui Gan) have enough power to last through 5 to 6 continuous steepings without losing their structure.

For Ripe Pu-erh:8 grams is the exact scientific threshold needed to yield that thick, dark, espresso-like liquor. It delivers the concentrated polyphenols required to effectively soothe the stomach and melt away grease after a heavy meal.

We’ve already done the math.

True luxury is the absence of friction. By mathematically pressing our single-origin leaves into precise 6g and 8g cakes, we’ve taken the complex chemistry of Eastern tea and translated it into a flawless, zero-mess daily ritual. You bring the hot water. We’ve already done the math.
